Sarah Bishop Chapters 1-6 Question 2

Why would someone want to steal silverware?

  1. 2. Back then silverware was actually silver ( please correct me if I'm wrong :) ). Since the colonists were being taxed I'm sure a few turned to robbing the richer to survive. It was all cause of taxation without representation. England was taxing us on the daily items we were used to. People probably just didn't realize they should boycott the products being taxed until they had no money left so instead they turned to stealing.

    1. Kailee, I agree to everything you said! First of all, I agree with what you said about King George taxing the colonists on their daily items so they turned to stealing. Second, I agree with you on they had to steal to survive, because of all the taxes. I never thought about the colonists not realizing they should juts boycott the items being taxed until they had no money left. Your paragraph is really good! It was well worded and had good points.

    2. Thanks Becca reading over these I realized that a couple people could have lived off the land. So maybe some of those stealing the silverware might just be doing it to be greedy and selfish. They allready had acces to the things they need to survive but they wanted more. So really it could have gone in so many more ways than what we've thought of.

    3. Kailee, I agree with you. Back then silverware was silver, so that means it is worth something. And with King George on the colonists case about taxes, people thought they could sell the silverware, and get the tax money that they needed.

  2. 2. There are a couple reasons on why someone would want to steal silverware. The first one is that silverware was the next step down from money. "Taxation without representation" was a big part of it too. When the king pressed tax, and the colonists boycotted the supply ships, it caused their cycle of money to stop flowing smoothly. So to pay their tax, they would need to have something to survive. So some people stole silverware to save their lives. That is why Sarah's dad buried his silverware, which was a great idea. If they stole a lot of silverware they would be rich! But that was why some people stole silverware.

  3. 2. People would want to steal silverware for a few reasons. First, silverware is made out of silver and silver was like money. Most Importantly, they stole it to survive. During Taxation without representation people were struggling with money. They couldn't pay all the taxes, and if they could they wouldn't have any money left. They needed to pay for things key to thier survival too. For example, they had to pay for food, without money for food they would starve to death. It is understandable for them to steal, if it means saving their lives. Basically, they had to steal silverware to pay their tax and to survive.

  4. 2.) Many colonists would steal siverwear for two reasons. One, people stole silverwear because it was siver back then like Kailee said. And with King George iii on the colonists case about taxes, they could get some money off stealing and selling siverwear. Second, people were desperate to get money because they were starving. It was very smart of Sarah's dad to bury the sisverwear, so know one could get to it. Thats why people/colonists stole silverwear.

    1. Chloe I agree with everything. I think the people will try to steal it too. I think you did a good job. I agree that is was smart that Sarah's dad buried the silverware. On your sixtieth sentence you wrote sisverwear instead of silverware.

  5. There are several reasons why someone wants to steal the silverware. First silverware is a lot of money. They wanted to sale them too get money for food and they have lots of taxes. Second everybody is poor and starving. Sarah's dad bury the silverware. He did want someone to steal it.

    1. Carmen, I agree wiht you on some things. One thing that I agree with you on is that you said that they could sell some of their silverware. This would give them money for taxs and stuff like that. But, in your paragraph, you said that Sarah's dad buired the silverware. That was correct. Then you said that he DID want someone to steal it, which was wrong. Sarah's dad did not anyone to steal it. He was the only one that knew where the silverware was. He did not even tell Sarah! You also said that everybody was poor and starving. This is true in some ways, but some people were wealthy. So, overall I liked your paragraph, even though there were some things that I did not agree on.

  6. 2. People would want to steal silverware simply beacue it was valuable. In times of war, especially the Revolutionary War, people didn't have a lot of money. Many people, like Sarah's family, had lost their farm in England. They had to start over with almost nothing. This makes anything of value worth stealing. Birdsall and his gang had begun terrorizing others and forcing them to give up their valuables.

    1. Hayden, I completely agree with you,Silverware was valuable so people would want to steal it. I like what you said about how some people had lost their farm in England. I never thought about that, but it makes total sense. If they lost their farm they would lose almost everything. All in all, I agree to everything you said. Your paragraph was really good!

  7. 2. I believe that the reason why someone would want to steal silverware is for money. If money was tight you would do anything for money, you could sell your silverware. But after you have sold your silverware and used up that money what do you do? Somehow you have to get more silverware. That is when the stealing part comes in. Money from silverware could help anyone in that economy. That is why someone would want to steal silverware.

    1. Hannah I agree with you completely people can be very greedy and selfish. When it came to some of those people who were struggling with money they probably freaked out over not having as much money as they were used to. So, they most likely turned to stealing silverware and other valuables that were worth a lot back then.
