  1. 1. The colonists could have done some things a bit differently so it might have saved them from the "starving time". For one thing, they could have not trusted Captain Ratcliffe. Captain Ratcliffe was not smart about when him and fifty men went to the Powhatans to trade for some corn. They should have all moved to Point Comfort. Point Comfort was safe. Kecoughtans were close for trading. Point Comfort would save people from starving or dieing in Jamestown. These are some reasons on how the colonists could have been saved from the "starving time".

I agree that the colonists should have thought a little bit more before destroying the Indians village. Captain Ratcliffe did not use his brain. The colonists thought they were still in charge. They definitely should have moved to Point comfort, and hid from the Indians. I agree with you on how they could have been saved from the starving time.

    2. Yes Allison the settlers were not smart to trust Captin Ratcliffe with any amount of responseability. Why else would he have been fired from being president?

    3. You have a great paragraph. The vocabulary was great. I couldn't believe I couldn't think of that. I mean really of course they aren't smart for trusting Captain Ratcliffe. It's ridiculous how smart that was. Again that was a great paragraph. I can't believe I forgot to mention that.

    4. I agree. Captain Ratcliffe was stupid. He should have at least had some caution. I didn't think of that. I also agree that they should have all moved to Point Comfort. It lives up to it's name. Nice paragraph.

    5. Allison, I completely agree with you. I think they should not have trusted Captain Ratcliffe, especially since he was already stripped of that duty in the beginning. I think that more people should've moved to Point Comfort and they would've been save. I also think that they should've listened to Captain Smith. I think that you were completely right and that you really thought that one through and that you thought of things that no one would. Good job.

    6. Fearghus: Ratcliff is too arrogant and should never have lead. I do not, however agree with your idea that they all should have went to point comfort.

  2. 2. I would live in Namontack's village for a couple of reasons. One is that Namontack's village is a healthy environment. His village also has a lot more experience with living in that area. Second is that Namontack's village has almost everything, including nice people, hunting skills, and fresh water. Plus it has tons of sources for these things too. Third is that Namontack's village has the right kind of ruler. Their ruler is strong, powereful, and tall. These characteristics make a very good village that I would want to live in.

I would have rather stayed in Namontack's village for multiple reasons too. One, there was plenty of food and everyone could eat however much they wanted. All of the Indians were super friendly. Whether it has to with fishing, hunting, and camping. I agree that Namontacks village is the best choice.

    2. Although I agree with you on everything that you wrote, you made me think of somethings that I never thought of. To start things off, I agree with you about how Namontack's village has most everything. There are many resources that the village has, and the people know how to use their resources, and not waste them. However, you made me realize that Namontack's village has the right kind of ruler. He cares about his village and knows everything thats going on in his village at all times. I agree that this would be the village I would want to live in.

    3. 2. Allison, I agree with your thoughts on the Indians having a strong leader. I would definitely rather live in a place with experienced leadership. The Indians seem to get along better than the colonists, I am sure this has something to do with a strong leader. I also like to fish and hunt, this probably doesn't have much to do with leadership, but I would rather live with Namontack also.

    4. I agree. Namontack's village was safe. It was safe from desieses. It was safe from people to. You were fed. You learned Indian ways. It was written. Nice job.

    5. Sorry. It was written WELL. My bad.

  3. 1.
There are multiple reasons why the colonists could have saved themselves from the starving time. The first one is that Captain Ratcliffe did not use his brain and didn't realize that going to the Powhatan's could endanger their lives. Especially after some of the colonists beat up their villagers, stole many beads and copper, and burned their houses down. They should have moved to Point comfort, and hid from the Indians. Kecoughtans were close by to trade, too. If only the new colonists cared for the Indians.

    1. Orin, I really liked your paragraph. It was very funny and smart. Your ideas were the best Iv'e seen. I agree with you when you said that Captain Ratcliffe did not use his brain. That they were going to anger the Powhatan people. That would endanger themselves. I also agree that you said that they should have all moved to Point Comfort. Once again, I totally agree with all of your paragraph.

  4. 7. The colonists had a time of starvation every winter. To prevent this they could have done some things differently. They could have had more indians come and live with them and help them grow food better. They could have also tried taking long hunting trips to get meat. They also could have learned which plants were edible and which were not. They also could have tried to send word to England for more food. These are some things they could have done differently.

    1. 7. David, i like your idea about sending word to England to request food. That is something I didn't think about and a good idea. I agree with your thoughts about a better relationship with the Indians. Not being at war with the Indians may have saved lives and food stores. Indians will probably always be a bit better at living off the land.

    2. Sending word to England was a brilliant solution David. I totally didn't think of that and I have to give you props for thinking of that. If only the people in James town thought of that they would've had it a lot easier. I also completely agree with you when you said that they should have asked the Natives to come live with them. Good job.

  5. 8. I would have rather lived at Namontack’s village instead of Jamestown. I would be fed and not have to worry about diseases. I could also learn the indian ways of planting, and hunting. I would love to learn how to sneak through the forest and shoot a bow and arrow. I would also love the food. The overall way of life would be way better at the indian village. Namontacks village beats Jamestown easy.

    1. I said I wouldn't because I would want to live in point comfort. Point comfort was way better. You live right next to Namontack's village so you don't have to worry about food. Samuel already knows almost all thee keys of surviving in the wild. He also has company. His company is John, Ann, and Virginia Layden. There are also more people that live with them.

I would have rather stayed in Namontack's village for multiple reasons. One, there was plenty of food and everyone could eat however much they wanted. All of the Indians were super friendly, and treated everyone with respect, unlike the colonists in Jamestown. There were many traditions, and ceremonies, and you could learn to do new things each day. Whether it has to with fishing, hunting, and camping. Namontacks village is obviously the best choice.

    1. Orin I completely agree with you. Namontack's vilage treated each other like family not, one part workers, one part women and children, and one part government authority. I like how they had the women do what they thought safe and appropriate, but they were still part of what was going on. Even the children were allowed to help and have fun. Life in Namontack's village really is better than life in Jamestown.

  7. 1. I believe many more Jamestown settlers could have survied. For one thing they very easily could have been smart and stocked up on food when they had the chance. The gentlemen could also have worked for their share of food instead of complaining. They should also have gotten their heads out of the darn clouds and realized they weren't back in England, they were in a place where if you didn't pull your own weight you were not going to last long. It's sad to say but some of the women did more work then any of the men. Seriously what kind off person would be able to search for gold from dawn to dusk, but not be able to do his/her own share in the colony? Maybe if their were more people who actually had a grip on life life John Smith, Richard and Samuel Jamestown might have been better off.

    1. I agree that they should have stocked up on food when they had the chance. I also agree they should have focused more on now then what they thought was going to happen. They should have conserved there food more than they did. I also agree that they need a grip on things in life.

  8. 2. I would have to chose Namontack's village. They had created a system that works and that everyone can take part in. The Men and boys were to hunt, build, and protect the village. The Women and girls and small children mended the clothes, healed the wounded, cooked, and raised the future tribe members. Everyone had their own part to play and were expected to do so, unless sick or wounded. Even figures of authorityhad to play their part and be fair. All in all this turned out to work great for their tribe and helped them survive even the harshest times of year. If I had to chose I would 100% chose Namontack's village it really is better than Jamestown.

    1. Kailee, I completely agree with you on everything you said. I agree with you on what you said about the system. They have been living there for a long while, and understood what had to be done in order to survive. In addition, I agree with you with what you said about how everyone had a part to play. If one person did not do their job, or did it wrong, it could mess up the whole system, but they could figure out how and what to do fast. Certainly, I agree with everything that you said

If one person didn't do their job right the whole system could get ruined! Your paragraph is really good and well written. I agree to all that you said.

  9. 1. There were definitely a couple of things the Englishmen could have done differently to avoid the "starving time." First, they could have tried harder to keep peace with the Indians and have a better relationship for trading and hunting. If the colonists knew they were at war with the Indians, it would have made more sense to guard Hog Island, because this was a main source of food. Secondly, this was not the first winter James Town had to survive. The colonists should have stored up more food. Lastly, Point Comfort would have been a better place to relocate prior to the winter. More people living together allows more people to share the work load and more people to protect their stores. Any one of these things may have helped the colonists avoid the "starving time."

    1. I agree Hayden. They could have tried to make peace with the indians. They should have stored up more food. They should have protected Hog Island better so they had more food to eat. 10. 2. I would rather live in Namontack's village because the Indians were better prepared. They were skilled fighters, wise about the wilderness and had far more experience about living off the land. I think the Indians knew how to stay warm. I don't think they were fighting over embers or staying in drafty houses. Indians were not lazy and worked better as a tribe. That kind of living situation seems better for me.

    2. I agree with you Hayden. The indians were skilled fighters. They could kill a bunny with a bow and arrow. They knew the land better than the colonists. They never got cold. They always had a fire going. The colonists were all lazy but the indians were always working.

  11. One thing they could have done different is not let the other colonists get out of hand. What I mean by that is when the colonists started beating the natves. They didn't just beat the natives they stole there goods and lit their houses on fire. If you don't let them do that then your looking good. No natives will be mad at you. You also don't have to worry about food because you can trade with the Indians. If you take that move away then you will survive the starving time.

  12. I would live in the fort away from James Town. The reason why is because I wouldn't want to wear those funky clothes. I would still live with colonists but am right next to friendly Indians. If we get hungry we can borrow food from them. I would ask the natives to teach me the ways of life. With those ways I with help our colony grow and succeed. After our colony is going great I will teach our colonists the ways of life. That's why I would rather live in the colonies not with the natives.

  14. I would rather live in Namontack's village. The reason for that is because they had a cycle that worked a lot better than the colonists cycle. The Indians hunted for food and made their homes and weapons better than the colonists. The Indians had bows and arrows, which was betterthan the colonists muskets. The Indians could have food whenever they wanted to,and have as much food as they wanted to. Their homes were built better than the colonists homes. They didn't cut down a bunch of trees like the colonists did.

Second they will get back together. They teach the others how to make stuff. Then all the colonists know how to make stuff to help them.

2.There are a couple reasons why I would live in Namontack's village. One of the reasons is they have a lot of food. They also have their own leader and not the Virginia Company making you do what they want. 17. 1. The colonists could’ve done multiple things to prevent, “ Starving time”. First of all, they could’ve done more farming and raising crops. If they farmed more, instead of looking for gold, they would’ve had enough food to last them for the winter. Additionally, they could’ve made peace with the Powhatans. As a result of the proud colonists destroying a village, the Powhatans were very angry and they wanted revenge. They wouldn’t trade with the colonists, and they started attacking the colonists again. Lastly, the colonists could have apologized about making the Powhatan King, a prince. The Powhatan King did not think of himself as a Englishmen, or a prince for that matter. He thought of himself as a Powhatan indian, and as the ruler of the Powhatan empire. Clearly, there was many things the colonists could have done to avoid “starving time”

    1. That's what I said in my paragraph. If the colonists grew more crops instead of looking for gold they would have enough for the winter. I know the Virginia Company wants gold, but if you don't eat you die, and if the colonists die there will be no one there to dig for gold. So growing crops for good should have been their first priority. Also they should have not made Chief Powahatan do that crowning thing. If Captain Smith didn't made Chief Powhatan do that, the Indians would have trusted them, and they could trade for food or get gifts. So I agree with you Giuliana.

The colonists should have grown more crops during the summer instead of look for gold, surviving should be the first priority!

  19. 2. Since many colonists were inexperienced with the life of the New World, I would have definitely chose to live in Namontacks village. Undoubtedly, the indians knew how to live in this area. They knew how to hunt, which foods were okay to eat, and all about the landscape. They knew how to use their resources, and not waste them. Additionally, the indians had a fair and respectable ruler. The Powhatan king knew as much about the land as his people did. When his people hurt, he hurt, unlike King George and the English people. If the British people were suffering, King George would still live as he always would. The Powhatan King cared about the people, while King George treated people with higher statuses way better. Namontack’s village was the obvious choice.

It was also a bad idea to make chief Powhatan a ruler under King James. Chief Powhatan got really mad at that. Some people could have moved to Point comfort. There was enough food for many people there. That's how some of the colonists could have survived the starving time.

I think that there is a certain things that they could've done differently to help avoid the," starving time." I think that they could've made peace with the Natives instead of burning down their houses and killing their people because if I remember correctly that basically makes or breaks their chance at any survival. You see at first, when the new colonists came to James Town, some of the men went and they attacked and stole from the Native's temples. They took their jewels and they killed and burned down everything and everyone that they could. If they actually would have respected and listened to Captain Smith instead of trusting Captain Ratcliffe, they wouldn't have done that and disrupted the peace between the Natives and the Englishmen. But, since they did do it, they basically told Chief Powhatan that his people are worthless and so is he and his power. They destroyed all peace and trust that there once was. So in return, Chief Powhatan made it so they would not help them at all and instead he told his people to kill them slowly and return to the way things were before they ever made peace with the Englishmen and they never helped the Englishmen in James Town again. In fact, everytime that they even left their protective walls to hunt or fish, they were shot with bows and arrows by the Natives. They ran out of food and eventually ended up dying or even digging up people's bodies just to eat. If they had also not listened to Captain Ratcliffe and kept treating Captain Smith like their president, they would've survived longer and would have more supplies from his trading and his skill in the Algonquian language. Instead, they decided to listen to Captain Ratcliffe who had already been stripped of his duties as a President in the past. Those decisions could've saved them if they had just made them.

I think that I would rather stay in Namontack's village instead of James Town. I would go there instead because they were a steady tribe with plenty of food and water. They had great work ethic and they knew how to hunt and fish. They had a good emperor with good traits and they were powerful with a good strong population and houses. They had families and men who hunted for their food and they knew how to keep warm in the winter. So basically they had great survival skills. Also, they had other tribes around them so if they had trouble, their brethren would come and help them with their troubles. On the other hand the Englishmen in James Town had no work ethnic and made the servants like Samuel do all the work. They didn't have a steady supply of food or good hunting skills. They didn't have enough people to keep the colony from extinction. They also didn't have any survival skills. Their people were dying and their diseases were spreading. They didn't have women to make them warm clothes and keep the population up. And when they realized that they needed to keep the population up they sent too many people and it was too crowded in the village. They didn't even give them a warning so they could start building houses. Also, they didn't even have good houses and they had to be saved by the Algonquian Princess, Pocahontas and they couldn't fend for themselves. I would definitely have wanted to be in Namontack's village with his tribe instead of in James Town.
