Thomas went to go live with the Powhatan people, and Namontack came to live in James Town, because the two groups had traded kids. One reason they did this, was because the Powhatan's wanted to see what it is like to live like an Englishmen, so they wanted Thomas to live in their village to see how he dealt with things, and what he does different than the Indians. The colonists wanted Namontack to show them how to work differently and better than how they had done things. They needed to know how to grow things better, hunt better, and so on.

    1. Orin, I really like your pharagraph. It had all of the reasons why the groups traded two people. Your pharagraph was clear and nicely written. I agree with you that Namontack could show them some things on what they needed, like how to hunt and how to grow things better. I thought that it was interesting that you said the Powhatan's wanted to see what it was like to live as an Englishman. Once again I liked your pharagraph and it's length. Your pharagraph was very suphisticated.

    2. I agree Orin. They did traded kids. Thomas went over to show the Powhatans how English men lived. The colonists wanted Namontack to teach them how to do farming better. Thomas learned how to live like a indian. Namontack learned how to live like a Englishman. I agree with you Orin.

    3. I agree. They switched so that they could learn the ways of the other tribe. Namontack could teach the colonists tricks. Thomas could tell Captain Smith about their tribe. He could be like and ambassador to the Powhatan people. Nice job. Your paragraph was well written.

    4. I totally agree with you on that Orin. I do believe that they were gaining knowledge by basically trading boys.I also think that Reverend Hunt wanted to teach Namontack about their gospel beliefs and I think that Samuel needed to learn about hunting and controlling his anger. I totally think you got the answer to that question completely right. So good job and I totally agree with you on everything that you said.

    5. Fearghus:That's almost exactly what I had said and I agree with you Orin.

Some of the traits that leaders need, are essential to their authority. Some of them are, working with your servants, listening to other peoples ideas, always being kind, and so on. A president/leader has needs to be forgiving of the mistakes the followers have done. The president needs to be kind to everybody, and not act selfish or stubborn. Mr. Wingfield had not one of these traits. He deserved to be dethroned.

    1. I completely agree! A leader should be able to understand what his/her people need. They should also be understandeing at all times, but fair as well. A good leader should always be able to cooraperate with their people, not push them off to the side and act selflessly.

      Delete
    2. I agree. A leader has to care about other people and not just himself. He has to be smart. He also has to be hard working. Also, he must be kind. They should also not deal out unjust punishments. I think you wrote this well. Nice job.

  3. 1. Thomas went to live with the Powhatan people and Namontackcame to the fort for a few reasons. One, is that Namontack was a servant boy and he might have wanted to see what it was like in the fort. The Powhatans and the English were starting to get along. Another reason is because Captain Smith might have that it would me good for the boys. Namontack could teach his language to the boys. One last reason is that since Namontack came, Reverend Hunt will try and teach him the good news of Christ. Then Namontack will bring the message of Christ to his tribe/people.

    2. It takes a lot of good traits to be a president, plus you have to be successful. Some good traits that I feel a good president should have to be successful are, one that they need to be caring. A good president would have to care about the whole colony. Two, they need to have been in the colony since the very beginning. Three, they need to be fair and willing to do his share of work. Last, a good president must turn out to be successful. These traits will lead a president to successful.

    1. I agree with you Allison for number one. Your paragraphs were nicely written and your points were stated clearly. I agree that they traded for multiple reasons such as to learn of each others cultures and religions. It is important to become allies with your neighbors.

I also agree with you for number two, because all three reasons that you stated are important for the leader to have. A president should always be caring. He or she should be close to his or her followers. They should always share the hard work, and not be selfish.

      Delete
  4. 5. Thomas and Namontack switched places. They did that so that they could join together in a sort of an alliance. Namontack got to learn how the English lived and could report back to Chief Powhatan about their “tribe”. Thomas could learn about the ways of the indians and could report to John Smith about their tribe. Also Namontack could help the colonists grow food better and could teach them indian tricks. Thomas could give them beads and copper so they would look pretty. That is why they switched places.

    1. I agree with you, David, because Thomas and Namontack could learn from each others way of life and report it back to their own tribe. The lessons learned from each other were only going to improve the way each tribe lived. The "trade" was definitely a sort of alliance. Whether the tribes were trading goods or people, it seemed to be strengthening their relationship between each other.

  5. 6. A president must have good character traits. One trait is courage. You must be courageous to lead men in a strange man. You can’t be afraid of what other people think and must make decisions based on what is best for the people not for yourself. Another trait is compassion. If you are a selfish swine like Master Wingfield you would only care for yourself and your personal needs. You must be able to feel for people. Lastly, a good president must be experienced. Experience is essential when being a leader because you must know what is best for your colony. These are some traits a good leader must have.

    1. Sorry, I meant to say you must have courage to lead men in a strange LAND not man.

    2. David, you are so right. A good leader must have courage. I think Captain Smith is very courageous. It seems that he makes decisions based on what is good for everybody, also. That is why Captain Smith is always in good standings with the colonists and not always the colony leaders. Throughout this entire book, Captain Smith definitely has the most experience as a white man with the Indians. I guess that is what makes him the best leader in my opinion.

    3. I agree with you David. You must be courageous. You must listen to the people not yourself. You must not be selfish. Captain Smith would make a good president. Captain Smith is well experienced with the indians. That is why I agree with you David.

    4. Haha David, I think that your mistake was priceless. I also completely agree with you about the traits that leader must have. I do think that they need to have courage and to be confident in themselves. I also believe that they need to think of others. And lastly, I also think that experience is essential. Good job.

  6. 1.) Thomas and Namontack were chosen to trade places and learn the way of the Powhatans or the Englishmen. First of all, they traded places because it was an act of peace between the Powhatan and the colonists. The Powhatan trusted the Englishmen to take care of one of their boys, and the Englishmen trusted the Powhatans with one of their own. If the Powhatans and the Englishmen were at war, or there was tension in the air, they would’ve never let of of the boys go to the others settlement. Secondly, the boys swapped places because it would be good to have one of their kind learn the ways of the other. Thomas would come back with many skills and much knowledge to share with the others so that they could survive. Namontack would go back to his people and share some of the ways the Englishmen lived. It was truly a good idea for the boys to swap places and live how the other one normally does.

    1. Giuliana, I completely agree with you. I think the Powhatans and the colonists are trading boys to keep, and make peace between the two groups. And if Thomas goes to live with the Powhatans, he can learn their way of life. If Thomas learns how the Powhatans survive especially in the winter, he can share that information with the colonists, they have a way better chance to survive in the new world. And Namontack can learn the English language, and teach it to the Powhatan tribe and then it will be easier for the Powhatans and the colonists to communicate.

  7. 1. Thomas went to live with the Powhatan's and Namontack went to live in the fort in order to "widen the circle" of trust between the tribes. Having Thomas live with the Powhatan people will show a sign of trust to the Indians. Having Namontack live with the Englishmen will give some insight about how the Powhattan's live and how they feel about the Englishmen. It also gives Samuel an opportunity to learn the Algonquian language better. Lastly, it gives Reverend Hunt hope that he will be able to share his belief in Christ with the Indian people. The "trade" of Thomas and Namontack opens the doors for learning and peace.

    1. That was a great paragraph. It really covered everything on the question. The part that I really liked was when you said that it would strengthen the trust between the natives and the colonists. But again your paragraph was great. My paragraph would have been very similar if I would have noticed that it would strengthen the colonies trust with the natives. I also like that you said that Samuel Would learn better Algonquian.

    2. Hayden I agree with you completely on widening the circle of trust. I didn't think of revered Hunt being able to tell the Indians a bought Christ. Great ideas Hayden. I like your paragraph a lot. Yes it was a sign of trust between the two.

  8. 2. In order for a good president to be successful he must have the traits of a true leader. A good president must be wise in order to see what may be coming in the future so the people he is responsible for can prepare for danger. Although a good leader must be wise, he cannot be arrogant to think he is far above the people he leads. He doesn't deserve better than everyone else, and he shouldn't have to work less than everyone else. Compassion is a necessary character trait for a good leader. Compassion will help the people feel important and understood. Unfortunately, many of the presidents in Jamestown let the power go to their heads and they lost their authority.

    1. I never thought of it that you had to be wise and kinda infer on what might come in the future. I agree that he shouldn't have to work any less than the others. Compassion is definitely a good character trait two have to help others. I agree that he can't be arrogant to know everything ahead but, you can still infer. I agree with you Hayden.

  9. 1.Thomas and Namontack switched because it was like a trade. They could learn about the others while the others learned about them. It helped let the Powhatans learn about the settlers and England all at th same time. I guess it would wok the same way with Thomas. The swap could also be hazardous, Namontack could be a spy for the Chief Powhatan. For now though they have at least mad peice with the Powhatan tribe. They have been able to trade peacefully, and learn more about each others life style. The swap between the two tribes could also be a way for the Powhatans to secretly adopt the colonist's boys, give the settlers a test or kill the colonists off one by one. For now though everything is at peace.

    1. I agree with everything that you wrote, and I never thought of some of the things you pointed out. In the first place, I agree with what you said about how it was like a trade. Thomas could learn the ways of the Powhatan, and Namontack could learn the ways of the Englishmen. On the other hand, I didn't think of Namontack being a spy. I think it could be certainly possible, and very hazardous. He could of been reporting to the Powhatan and telling them all about the Englishmen ways. Certainly, you have made me think more about the book, and what could of happened.

  10. 2. Good leaders come in many forms. No matter what they look like they should lead with passion an understanding. They should also be fair though, if they were to go to easy or hard they would lose respect fast. A good leader should be able to work as one with there country or civilization, not make tham do all the work. They should not be afraid to get their hands dirty every once in a while when their people need them the most. Even if they have a few flaws they should always be trying their best no matter what. Everyone makes mistakes so a good leader should lead by example and admit to their mistakes. At first people may be upset but at least they would understand. No leader should eveer just let their people work and take all the credit. A leader sould also represent their people, a leader is nothing without followers. As long as a leader is willing to make mistakes, learn from them, and take resonsibility they should be great.

  11. 1. Nomantack and Thomas switched places so they could build peace between the Powhatans and Englishmen. Nomantack would learn the ways of the englishmen and Thomas would learn the ways of the powhatans. Nomantack would go back and tell his people some of the ways that the englishmen lived and Thomas would go back and tell his people some of the ways the powhatans lived.Thomas and Nomantack trading places shows an act of trust. The Powhatans would trust the Englishmen to take care of one of there boys and the Englishmen would do the same. If there was tention between the two they would have never traded places.

  12. 1.) Thomas and Nomantack traded places to keep peace between the English colonists and the Powhatans. They did this to show a sign of trust, if the colonists didn't trust the Powhatans, they would have not traded boys, and same with the Powhatans, if they did not trust the Colonists they would have not traded boys for one. Second, it is a good way to learn each others way of life. When Thomas comes back he can share how the Powhatans survive, and the colonists can use that information to survive too. Also the colonists can sleep at night knowing that there will be no more battles between them. So I think it was a great idea to trade boys for awhile, that's very smart.

  13. 2.A good president must have certain traits to be a leader. He must be caring. A good president needs to care about everyone. You need to focus on what is best for the people and not just for yourself. A good president must also be compassionate. Having compassion will make the people feel important and respected. Lastly, a good president has to be fair. In order to have the respect people are willing to give you should not take it for granted.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I completely agree with everything that you wrote. Of course a good president must have compassion and be caring! If the president did not have these qualities and traits, he/she should have never been elected in the first place. I also think a president should be fair. If a president was like King George who was selfish and gave privileges to certain people, but punished other people for no reason, he/she should not be in office. You definitely gave necessary traits and qualities a good president should have.

      Delete
  14. 2.) There are many needed qualities and traits for a colonist president to have. Undoubtedly, a good president must have experience, and knowledge of his land and the people in it. For example, in Blood on the River, Captain Smith was a better president than the gentleman because he knew about the land, and how to run a colony. He was experienced in living in a colony so he knew what had to be done in order to survive. Following this further, a good president needs to care about his/her land and always do what's best for the people, and not his/ her self. If a president is in office for the money that it brings and not for the country/land itself, he/her is not worthy of being president. If the president is doing something for the benefit for him/herself, and not for the benefit of the whole country, again, this president is not worthy of his/her position. Overall, a president really just needs to do what he/she thinks is best for the people.

    ReplyDelete
  15. 2.) I think this is what makes a good leader or president. He/she needs to be strong mentally and physically. He/she needs to take charge also he/she needs to be commanding, because your followers will now fear you, but they will respect you and listen to you. Last a leader needs to be kind and encouraging. He/she needs to know that they need that mostly the kids, like in blood on the river, they don't have parents or are far way they need to be loved. That's what makes a good leader to me.

    1. I almost completely agree with you Chloe your right about must everything. I do disagree with you about you followers fearing you though, because then you really would not be agood leader. 16. 1. The Powhatans sent Namontack and the colonists sent Thomas because the Powhatan wanted to see how to see how the colonists lived. The Powhatan sent Namontack to live with the colonist so he could see their lifestyle. The colonists sent Thomas to live with the Powhatan so he could see their lifestyle. Namontack went to learn english words. Thomas went to learn how to grow stuff. Namontack went to England. He took a stick to count the people in England.

    2. A good president needs to listen to other peoples thoughts. Not like King George how he did not listen to the colonists. The president needs to do as much work as his servants. He needs to care for his people. The president needs to never beat his servants. Never whip his servants. Thats what a good president would be.

  17. The Powhatans sent Namontack to live with the colonists and the colonists sent Thomas to live with the Powhatans because both settlements wanted to know how they each worked. Thomas was sent to

  18. A president is supposed to listen to other peoples thoughts and talk about those thoughts with the people. King James on the other hand did not listen to other peoples thoughts and talk to the people abut those thoughts. A president needs to work as much as his people do and care for his people. A president should never harm his own people. That is
what a president is supposed to be like.

  19. 1.Thomas went to live with the Powhatan people, and Namontack come to the fort. One of the reaons that Thomas went to live with the people because he was tried of being cold. He was also didn't like being wet and the bug in his room when he went to bed. the rain is another reason why to live with the Powhatans. Also Namontack went to go to the fort. Namontack was adopted by Reverend Hunt. Clearly, they got what they wanted.

  20. The reason why Thomas went to go live Powhatan people was beacause they traded servant boys. Samuel became good friends with Namontack. Namontack was sent to England to meet the king. He thinks the the British king is way worse than Chief Powhatan. He also thinks that the king smells and should bathe. Namontack also believes that his god is better. The native culture also thinks that there is more than one god. Reverened Hunt gets angry and tries to teach him to spread the word of the lord.

  21. 2.I rather have a presindent that cares about health and education then a president that only cares about him self. One of the things a president should be concerned about is the country's financial stability. They should also concerned about reliabilty. In fact, a president should let people uphold their rights.

  22. A good president should have a couple of traits. One trait should be leadership. If you don't have leadership then you are unfit for the job. Another reason is the ability to trade. If you can't trade then you won't survive in the colonies. Another trait you need is trustworthyness. If you can't trust your colonists then you again won't survive. Not just that your colonists should be able to trust you.

  23. I believe that the reason they swapped Thomas and Namontack is purely for learning reasons. My reasoning is with this swap many things will come. The first reason is I think so Reverend Hunt can teach Namontack about God. Then after they switch back Namontack can spread the word of God. Thomas as will be learning as well. He will get more helpful tips on how to live. I hope they will more about each others tribe. This is why they made the swap.

  24. That’s another thing that I forgot to mention. King George was a horrible king. He never listened to anybody's thoughts. He only cared about himself. All he wanted to be was rich and fat. But Captain Smith was a great president because he had all those traits. He never treated people meanly. He gave food rations and set rules. One of the main rules was if you don’t work then you don’t eat.

  25. 1. I think that the reason they swapped Thomas and Namontack was two learn from each other. Thomas would learn the way of life from the Indians. Nomontack would learn from the Englishmen. I think this was a good idea because the two people would learn from each other. It was also to build community with each other. All in all this was a wise choice. This is why I think they switched.

The Powhatan tribe and the Englishmen traded the boys for two boys for a couple reasons. First of all they traded boys to gain each others trust. And they did so by taking care of the others boy and teaching them their ways. They also traded boys because the Englishmen wanted Samuel to learn to hunt and to learn their survival skills. And the Powhatan tribe wanted Namontack to learn how the Englishmen worked and how their government worked.Them trading was probably the best thing that they could've done because they gained each others trust and now they trade more to survive.

I think a good leader has to have certain traits. Those include a good personality because
I feel that if your leader doesn't have a personality then he or she won't have a good mind for what others need and what they are asking for. I also believe that they need to have courage because if they come across a dangerous situation of anything form a threat to a war, they need to have the courage to keep going. I also believe that they need to be level headed and they can't have anger issues. I believe that a good leader needs to know what is good for them and what is not. That is what I think a good leader needs.
